Chettinad Sarees


Chettinad is a small town located in the Southern Indian state of Tamilnadu. Chettinad is famous for its delicious cuisines, temples and mansions, but one more thing that makes Chettinad known to the whole country is Chettinad Sarees. Chettinad saris are mostly found in cotton or silk fabrics.

North Indian Sarees

Sarees of North India:

Banarasi Saree is named after the famous city of Uttar Pradesh state – Banaras, aka Varansi. These sarees are known for its heavy gold and silver weaving work. Bandhani Sarees:
Bandhini sarees are famous for its excellent design pattern and tie and dye technique. Bandhani sarees are also called Bandhej sarees, belong to Indian state Rajasthan. These sarees are made by dyeing the fabric in a manner, that the tied part creates patterns over the fabric. These sarees are found in fast and bright colors with dots, square or wave prints.

South Indian Traditional Dresses


 
South Indian traditional dresses refer to the women clothing of South Indian states Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. South Indian women mostly wear Saree, but the fabric and way of wearing it varies from state to state.

Traditional Dress of Kerala:
Mundu Neriyathu is traditional dress of Kerala worn by Hindu women, Christian women wear mundu with chatta (blouse). While Saree is also an official dress of Kerala, which is worn by women during various occasions and festivals.
Apart from South Indian Sarees traditional teenage dress of Keralite girls is full length Skirt with long blouse. Rather than cities or town it is mostly worn by the village girls.


Traditional Dress of Tamilnadu:
Till few years ago Half Saree or Pavada was the traditional dress of the state, but now a days Saree has dominated the traditional wear of Tamil Nadu. Sarees made of silk with rich zari work reflect the glimpse of Tamilnadu tradition. Sarees here are available in the varieties of fabrics like cotton, silk, georgette, chiffon, crepe etc.

Traditional Dress of Karnataka:
The traditional dress of Karnataka represents the rich culture and harmony of the state. Saree is traditional attire for women, in which bold and vibrant colors are used. As Karnataka is the hub of silk, so sarees made of silk are the specialty of the state. Mysore silk is renowned all over the world, while cotton, chiffon and satin sarees with embroidery work are also popular.


Traditional Dress of Andhra Pradesh
Like other South Indian states, the women's traditional dress of Andhra Pradesh also represents the diverse and alive culture of the state. The common costumes worn by Hindu women is Saree blouse, while Muslim women wear Burkha. The handloom and Gadwal sarees of the state are very much popular.
